LEADERSHIP LAB
Great Team Lead or Free Therapist?
Which one are you?
If you’re a leader who knows their onions (and I believe you are), chances are, you know just how important prioritizing mental health in the workplace is!
And so, you most likely position yourself as a ‘‘safe space’’ for your team members to be vulnerable about their issues.
So yesterday, Tola told you about her breakup affecting her work. And today, your other direct report just told you they can’t come to work 'cause their cat died.
Cool stuff, right?
Yes, it is. Your team members should be able to talk to you. You’re not their president general among the nations.
But let’s be honest - the lines may become so blurred that you don’t even know when you’ve become their unlicensed therapist. And according to leadership OGs:
Oversharing when it comes to mental health issues can blur the lines between personal and professional relationships, potentially eroding a manager’s authority and breeding problems down the road
It’s great that you’re a leader who understands mental health in the workplace, but you must know where to draw the line!
If not, you’ll find yourself experiencing burnout every two working days, because, like a wise man once said, problem truly no dey finish.
So, what’s my point?
Your team members will always issues, but pleaseeeeeee, remember that you’re their manager - not their therapist. Again, DRAW THE LINE!
Oh, you don’t know how to? Gotchu!
Grab your ruler, coffee, notebook and…
MY LEADERSHIP STORY
‘‘I am an Awful Manager’’
That’s what I told myself 2 months after becoming a manager for the first time.
I had started a new job in a startup. I had never managed before, or worked in a startup, for that matter. The task was to manage ONE PERSON. What could go wrong?
